Common automotive exterior plastic materials mainly include polypropylene (PP), ABS, ASA, PC/ABS alloy, TPO, and PMMA. These materials are widely used in various exterior parts due to their excellent weather resistance, impact resistance, and molding performance.
1. Polypropylene (PP)
Applications: Front and rear bumpers, mudguards, wheel arches, scuff plates, etc.
Advantages: Low density, lightweight, low cost. Its impact resistance and low-temperature performance can be significantly improved through modification (such as adding EPDM rubber or talc).
Typical Forms: PP/EPDM blends are widely used in bumper skins, possessing good elastic recovery and are not easily cracked after low-speed collisions.
2. ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Copolymer)
Applications: Radiator grilles, door handles, rearview mirror housings, trim strips, etc.
Features and Advantages: High surface gloss, easy electroplating, and good heat resistance, suitable for manufacturing parts requiring high aesthetics and structural strength.
Advanced Applications: PC/ABS alloys combine the heat resistance of PC with the processability of ABS, commonly used in front grilles and headlight covers of high-end vehicles.
3. ASA (Acrylonitrile-Styrene-Acrylic Ester Copolymer)
Applications: Exterior rearview mirror housings, side skirts, wheel covers, and other parts exposed to sunlight for extended periods.
Features and Advantages: Excellent UV resistance; does not yellow or crack after long-term outdoor use, making it an ideal alternative to ABS for high-weather applications.
4. TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin Elastomer)
Applications: Bumper skins, side panels, etc.
Features and Advantages: Dynamically vulcanized from PP and EPDM, combining the processability of plastics with the high elasticity of rubber, excellent low-temperature toughness, and widely used in bumpers for mid-to-low-end vehicles.
