PP (polypropylene) and its modified materials are currently the mainstream material best suited for automotive exterior plastic parts, especially in bumpers, grilles, and mudguards, due to their optimal balance between lightweight, cost control, impact resistance, and processability.
1. PP (Polypropylene): Optimal Overall Performance
Advantages: Low density (approximately 0.9 g/cm³), significantly reducing vehicle weight and improving fuel economy and range; Low cost, suitable for mass production; Low-temperature impact resistance and rigidity can be significantly improved through modification (e.g., adding EPDM rubber, talc); Good chemical stability and corrosion resistance, adaptable to complex environments.
Typical Applications: Front/rear bumper skins, wheel arches, side skirts, etc.
Representative Models: Volkswagen Santana, Ford Fiesta, Fiat Viaggio, etc., widely using PP/EPDM or TPO materials.
2. PC/ABS Alloy: Preferred for Mid-to-High-End Models
Advantages: High impact resistance, heat resistance, easy to paint, high surface gloss; maintains good toughness at low temperatures, suitable for complex climates; supports precision injection molding, adaptable to the integration needs of intelligent front-end modules.
Typical Applications: High-end car bumpers, grilles, headlight frames, etc.
Representative Models: NIO ET7, XPeng G9, and other intelligent electric vehicles.
3. ASA (Acrylonitrile-Styrene-Acrylic Rubber): Strongest Weather Resistance
Advantages: Far superior resistance to UV rays and oxidative aging compared to ABS; does not fade or chalk after long-term exposure to sunlight; suitable for use in areas with high sunlight and high temperatures.
Typical Applications: Rearview mirror housings, roof racks, outdoor exposed parts.
4. TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin): Outstanding Collision Safety
Advantages: Made from dynamically vulcanized PP and EPDM, combining the processability of plastics with the high elasticity of rubber; Maintains good energy absorption performance even below -30℃, effectively protecting pedestrian safety.
Typical Applications: Bumper covers for Volkswagen Bora, Passat, Mazda 6, and other models.
